How to Verify if the Cache Batteries are Good in a StorageWorks Modular Storage Array (MSA) 20

When one or both of the batteriesin an HP StorageWorks Modular Storage Array (MSA) 20 Controller are failed, disconnected, or not seated properly, the MSA20 does not run in an optimalmode. Write cache is disabled if a battery is failed, not present, or seatedimproperly. As a result, the MSA20 could have significant loss of sequentialwrite performance. Each MSA has the 7-segment display and the status messagepertains to the two batteries attached to that MSA only. Each MSA in yourenvironment should be checked for this issue.
MSA20s running Firmware v2.00 orlater in any configuration
Use the following checklist toverify this condition for MSA20s running firmware v2.00 or later.
NOTE: This applies to both MSA20s attached directly to a SmartArray controller and to MSA20s attached behind an MSA1500cs or MSA1510i.

1.    For battery failure status, the 7-segment display on the rear ofthe MSA20 displays the following:
a.    F1 indicates lower battery packfailure (MSA Battery #1 - attached directly to cache).
b.   F2 indicates upper battery packfailure (MSA Battery #2).
c.    F3 indicates both types of batterypack failures.

NOTE: MSA20 firmware v2.00 will be available in January 2007.
MSA20s running Firmware versionsprior to v2.00
1.    If the MSA20 is attached directly to a Smartarray controller, run ACU:
Launch the Array Configuration Utility (ACU). Choose the MSA20 inquestion and click More Information . Scroll down to Battery Status. If it shows OK , then the battery is seated properly and fullycharged. If another status other than OK is displayed, leave the MSA20system powered on for a minimum of 6.5 hours. Recheck the ACU as previouslystated. If it is not seated properly or bad, then it will show charging. MSA20 firmware v2.00 fixes the messaging so that a bad or unseated batteryreports as failed .
NOTE: If the MSA20 has been powered for less than 6.5 hours, charging could mean the battery is actually charging.
2.    If the MSA20 is attached behind an MSA1500 orMSA1510i, visually inspect:
The MSA diagnostic tools (ACU, ADU, CLI) do not report batterystatus for MSA20s running firmware versions prior to v2.00 and attached to aMSA1500 or MSA1510i. A visual inspection can be performed to verify the cachebattery condition and position. If the battery appears degraded it should bereplaced with a new one. If it is visually skewed, it is not seated correctlyon the housing. Please see Customer Advisory, c00592820 , for more information about improperly seated cachebatteries.
Before attempting visual inspection of the cache battery, makesure the entire MSA20 is shutdown . In addition, if the MSA20 is attachedto an MSA1500cs, make sure the MSA1500cs is also powered off.Unplug the SCSI cable connected to the SATA controller module and pull the SATAcontroller module out of MSA20 chassis.
